Statement of Need
The need for Financial Management for NGOs arises from many intertwined factors such as: Empirically observed weaknesses in knowledge, skills and altitudes of managers and staff of most NGOS; weaknesses in the financial management of donor and government funds. Weaknesses in NGOs accountability and lack of adequate good governance and full transparency among some NGOs; is yet another reason. Perverse overdependence by NGOs on donor funds to finance operations and low financial management priority by most NGOs is caused by weak knowledge, skills, and altitudes in proper financial management. In the light of changing world sentiments on perverse funding of NGOs that do not seem to attain self-financial sustenance, together with the fact that NGOs operate in rapidly changing competitive environment, has influenced this course. If NGOs are to survive in this challenging environment, their management competences in financial management and hence this programme.

Objectives of the Programme
The overall objective of the programme is to improve NGO-financial management knowledge, and skills. By the end of the training therefore participants will be able to:

  • Utilize modern financial management and enhance performance of NGOs
  • Introduce and effectively utilize, Financial Management Systems that are internationally acceptable
  • Upgrade their skills in financial reporting to donors, government, beneficiaries and other stakeholders, and
  • Contribute to NGOs attainment of self-financial sustenance

Subject Areas shall include:
  • Financial management for NGOS
  • Financial Accounting and financial planning & budgeting
  • Interpreting Financial Statements - Financial ratios; and Variance Analysis
  • Preparation of reports such as Management reports, Cash-flow reports, Budget Monitoring reports and Forecast reports, and
  • RISK MANAGEMENT FOR NGOs: Principles of Risk Management for NGOs, Delegated Authority, Separation of Duties, the Procurement Process, Warning Signs of Fraud, and Dealing with Fraud and Irregularities

The target audience of this programme Management and Staff of NGOs, members of the Board of Directors of NGOs, auditing firms that audit NGOs and Government official dealing with NGOs.
